A Little Bit About Andrew
Andrew takes pride in being a well-rounded musician, comfortable in many different musical styles. As a trombonist, he has toured the US with the musical revue "I Can't Stop Loving You: The Music Of Ray Charles," served as a Musical Director and showband musician for Carnival Cruise Lines and performed with The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, The Twilight Band, the Salsa/Latin Jazz groups Descarga and Salsarengue, the 2004 DisneyWorld Collegiate All-Star Band, and the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. Andrew was invited to the 2006 International Trombone Festival in Bimingham England where he was a finalist in the International Trombone Association’s Frank Wiehe solo competition, which celebrates the music of trombone legend Arthur Pryor.
Andrew graduated magna cum laude from the University of Arizona in 2005 with degrees in Instrumental Music Education and Trombone Performance where he was the recipient of the “Outstanding Senior” Award from the College of Fine Arts for his graduating class. As an educator and conductor, Andrew has experience teaching private lessons, giving masterclasses and leading groups of many ability levels, from Universities to Elementary schools. This includes leading and/or conducting the UofA Symphonic Band, high school and middle school bands/combos of the internationally renowned Arizona Jazz Academy, and the UofA Middle School Outreach Band.
Andrew is currently the Director of Bands at Doolen Middle School in Tucson, Arizona. In addition to his duties at Doolen, Andrew serves as musical director/lead trombonist for Descarga, a fine salsa/latin jazz group that can be heard every Friday night at El Parador, Tucson's hottest salsa club. He also plays there every Saturday with Salsarengue, Tucson's other premiere salsa group. Andrew is pleased to be back in the classroom full time (especially at such a fine school!) while gigging with these and other various fine groups in the Tucson area.
